Bay man pedals for cancer

A RICHARDS BAY cyclist will soon be joining a team of international cyclists to embark on a tour of England to raise funds for cancer.

Chris Visagie teams up with a group of 10-14 cyclists on 10 July, who aim to ride south to north from Lands End to John O'Groats in the United Kingdom, in just ten days.

With the motto '1000 miles, 10 days, 1 cure', the cyclists intend on raising much needed funds for gastrointestinal stomal tumour (GIST), which falls into the sarcoma category of cancer.

Covering a distance of 1600km, the cyclists will ride as a group and not in relay format. Fifty-year-old Visagie says he got involved in the project to raise awareness about the disease, especially since his son is also a sarcoma cancer patient.

According to Visagie, GIST is a rare gastrointestinal cancer for which there is no known cure. The father of two says they aim to raise 250 000 pounds to fund research, which is vital to the long-term suvival of those coping with GIST.

'I urge local cancer patients to get in touch with me as a token of hope and encouragement. For me, this tour symbolises that someone cares for our cancer patients,' said Visagie.
